AFTER CARE

Dental after care advice from the professionals IN FERNDOWN

New dentures may initially feel strange and perhaps a little bulky at first, mainly if they are your first set of dentures. Inserting and removing a new denture may also feel a little odd and may need some practice. Most people adapt to their new dentures quickly. Wessex Denture Studio is on hand to provide you with advice and support when it comes to dental aftercare. We serve across Ferndown, Dorset, Ringwood, Fordingbridge, Winborne, and Verwood.

Wearing your new dentures

Wear your new dentures during the day, remembering to take them out for cleaning after meals. Wessex Denture Studio does not recommend that dentures are worn overnight as they can represent a choking hazard during sleep. Removing dentures overnight also promotes oral health as it allows the gums to rest. Dentures should be kept in a container of cold water when not in use.

discomfort

Some discomfort may occur when you start wearing your new teeth, a bit like when wearing new shoes; there may be a period of adjusting to your new teeth.
When your new dentures are fitted Francis will book a review appointment for you, approximately 1week later, where Philip will check the fit and function of your new teeth. He will also ease any areas that have caused discomfort.
If you experience sore spots in the first 24-48 hours and feel that you cannot wait for the review appointment, Frances will be happy to book an earlier appointment.

Speaking with New dentures

Sometimes new dentures can alter speech, and certain words may require practise. This usually rectifies itself and speech is back to normal within a week. This process can be speeded up by reading out loud.

eating

Start with soft foods progressing on to more solid foods as your confidence grows. You may need to take smaller pieces of food, to begin with as you get used to chewing with your new teeth. Try to ensure you eat with both sides of your mouth.

cleaning

Your dentures are as susceptible to staining, tarter and build-up of food debris as natural teeth. We recommend cleaning your new dentures with a soft toothbrush or denture brush with soap and warm running water. Avoid using toothpaste, abrasive pastes or smokers toothpaste as these can damage the polished surfaces of your denture and make staining and tartar build-up more likely.
Many of the dentures we repair have been dropped in the sink while cleaning. We would, therefore, recommend either cleaning your dentures over a sink filled with water or lined with a flannel.

soaking

You can use a proprietary denture-cleaning tablet to loosen and remove stains from your denture. A 10min soak twice a week should help keep your denture clean. Never leave your dentures in the solution overnight, and never use a cleaning tablet on dentures with a metal plate or a soft lining.

caring for your mouth

Whether you still have natural teeth or you have no teeth left at all, caring for your mouth is always important. Clean natural teeth, gums, tongue and palate twice a day with a soft brush to remove plaque and ensure good oral health.
